Couple Quits Careers to Jeep Across Africa

Written by Chloe Harwood

Beefed up 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited faces thousands of miles across wild African terrain.

A couple from Oregon, Jared Simpson and Jen Usinger are looking forward to an adventure of a lifetime, as they plan to travel from the southern tip of South Africa to the northern edge of Morocco. They will take their custom built 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited over 25,000 miles for the next two to three years, as they plan to touch almost every corner of the large continent of Africa.

The couple has made multiple trips to South Africa in the past and they admit they had fallen in love with the terrain, the culture and the people. Their curiosity to explore the rest of the vast continent spurred them to quit their careers, and try a new way of enjoying life.

Their plan is to travel 150 miles per day, which will stretch their epic journey over the next couple of years, which they will document on their blog Pioneering Spirit. It will be incredibly interesting to see how this American built Jeep will handle the rough and hot terrain of Africa.

A local Jeep dealer, Springfield Jeep claims the Jeep Wrangler is the best vehicle possible to handle such a dry and hot terrain. As long as the couple has the capabilities of servicing their own vehicle properly, they should have zero issues with the trip.

So how much will this cost the couple?

That is a very important question, as the couple has estimated it will cost them roughly $60, or as much as $100 per day to cover their travel, stay, food and other miscellaneous expenses. The rational fear that many hearing about this trip have is, do they plan to travel into nations where there is known conflict?

Sometimes taking a major risk like these two are doing, it will provide the ultimate story, and for Jeep enthusiasts, this will be a great story for them to follow over the next couple of years. Who knows maybe it will become a book or movie.
