Why We Love Volunteering Abroad (And You Should Too)

Written by Chloe Harwood

The notion of volunteering abroad has become increasingly popular in the last decade or two. This is largely due to improvements in international travel. However, it’s also partly down to the fact people are becoming more aware of the benefits it offers.

It doesn’t matter if you are going for a gap year or a shorter stay. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and is something that all ardent travellers should take. Quite frankly, it’s the most rewarding trip you’ll ever experience. Before doing anything, you should research the different projects available. Find one that suits your specific goals, and it should become the adventure of a lifetime.

Regardless of what option you take, it will be a phenomenal chance to see the real world. Make no mistake, we love holidaying in tourist attractions. However, climbing Table Mountain, for example, doesn’t give you a genuine look at South Africa as a whole. It’s no different anywhere in the world. If you want to truly experience a new culture, then this is the way to do it.

Not only will you learn about the different cultures, but you’ll also learn about yourself. This journey of self-exploration will benefit travellers of any age. However, for college leavers and other young candidates, it can also teach you to be self-sufficient. Simple ideas like earning money while on your travels will make you better prepared for life back home.

The most important thing you’ll learn on your travels, though, is the rewards of helping your fellow man. As a society, we’ve become a little immune to the struggles of others. The feelings gained from improving the lives of people in need will undoubtedly change your life forever. Moreover, you’ll be making friendships that will last a lifetime. Staying in touch via email or letters upon your return will enrich your life forever. Ultimately, these human interactions surpass any joy that a standard two-week holiday at the beach can bring.

It’s a two-way street, though, and their culture will actively improve your life. You can prepare yourself for this education before arrival by using the internet to gain a better insight into the country. Searching the latest Nigeria news, for example, in the months leading up to the trip will serve you very well. It gives you an instant talking point and also shows your commitment to making the most from this trip.

One of the great things about exploring this world is that it gives you great life experiences and stories to tell. They don’t come any better than those gained from volunteering.

Have you got friends or relatives that have taken a similar trip? If so, I bet it’s the first adventure they want to discuss when reminiscing about past trips abroad. There’s very good reason for this. It’s because this is the journey that will enrich your life better than other.

At the end of the day, you couldn’t want anything else from a trip abroad. If you’ve ever pondered about the benefits, now is the time to satisfy that curiosity. Believe me, you will not regret it.
